The morning started like any other morning. I woke up and hopped in the shower. After getting dressed, I contemplated just working from home for the whole week as I was really frustrated trying to find clothes that fit. Scott convinced me that if I went into labor while at home by myself, it would be almost 45 minutes before he got back down to the city to pick me up and then another 30 minutes to get from our house to the hospital. So we headed into work and I experience a minor contraction, but nothing really to write home about. I dropped off Scott at his office. While sitting at a light on my way to my office, I thought my water had broken (8:15 AM). Now, I watch way too much TV so I was expecting a huge gush of water. This wasn’t that type of scenario so I didn’t think much of it.
I made it to my cube and sat down, thinking that if I was going into labor, I would know for certain. I was starving so I decided to take a walk to the cafeteria for some breakfast. I figured that I should eat something now as I probably won’t be able to for a long time, if I had to head to the hospital.
As I was walking, I had another trickle of water (9:00 AM). At this point, I was getting concerned. As soon as I got back to my desk, I called Dr. Herrmann’s office and relayed the situation to the nurse. Her first question was “Are you having any contractions?” I didn’t know what a contraction would feel like so I said no. She advised that I should head into the office and she’ll have Dr. H examine me. I called Scott and told him that since I wasn’t have contractions that I was going to drive myself to the doctor’s and if they sent me to the hospital, I’d call him. He insisted that he pick me and we head to office together. While waiting for Scott to pick me up, I started to feel a little worse. But again, nothing like you see on TV…
When we final got in to see Dr. H (9:45 AM), he confirmed that my water did break and told us to go straight to Labor & Delivery. I was already 5 cm dilated and there would be no need to stop in the Women’s Evaluation Unit. Scott and I headed up to 2nd floor, where the L&D nurses admitted us (10:30AM). Scott called my parents and told them to start heading for the Detroit airport as soon as possible and we would book a flight for them to jump on.
I started feeling minor contractions, but they were very irregular. The nurse gave me some Petocin to make those contractions a little more regular (12:15 PM). As soon as that kicked in, the real contractions started. Man, they were unbearable. Fortunately for me, I only had to experience 3 of them before the anesthesiologist came with the Epidural. He soon became my favorite person in the world! (1:30 PM)
Shortly after, my L&D nurse, Linda, did another internal exam and I was now completely dilated and ready to start pushing (3:00 PM). I pushed for about an hour when they final called Dr. H to come in for delivery. After two big pushed with Dr. H, Jacob was born (4:27 PM).
Scott and I are so blessed to such a great gift come into our lives!!
